Following the EIF-EU40 Study Visit to Silicon Valley that brought 15 MEPs on a tour last July (highlight videos are available here), on 9 November all EIF and EU40’s members and friends had the opportunity to discuss with prominent speakers what Europe has been doing to help start-ups and scale-ups overcome their biggest challenges and what take-aways are still relevant from Silicon Valley’s famous ecosystem.
MEP Sorin Moisa (co-host);
MEP Lambert van Nistelrooij (co-host);
Peteris Zilgalvis, Head of Unit, Start-ups and Innovation, DG CONNECT, European Commission;
Georges Nahon, CEO, Orange Silicon Valley;
Fabrizio Porrino, VP Global Public Affairs, FacilityLive and Launch Spokesperson, European Tech Alliance
The Exchange of views with participants happened under the Chatham House rule.
A scene-setting and thought-provoking presentation was offered by the CEO of Orange Silicon Valley, while the Head of Unit for Start-ups and Innovation, European Commission (DG CONNECT) presented the ‘Startup Europe Club’ and ‘Scaleup Europe Manifesto’ initiatives. Finally the VP Global Public Affairs of FacilityLive shared his views as part of this year’s Startup Europe Comes to Silicon Valley delegation, and – on the day of the first EU Tech Day to celebrate its first year of life – he introduced the European Tech Alliance and explained why major European scale-ups have come together to give birth to it.
